Windows Home Server AddIn: Advanced Admin Console

January 21st, 2008

This AddIn is for all Home Server administrators who want to have full control over their Home Server at any time. It allows to jump to the following areas of your Home Server within the Home Server Console:

    • Control Panel
    • Printers and Faxes
    • Administrative Tools
    • Start Menu
    • “My Computer” (Which really should be called “My Server” on Windows Server SKUs)
    • My Network Places
    • Workgroup
    • Network Connections

Moreover you can launch a Command Prompt, PowerShell (if installed), Task Manager and Registry Editor from the menu. Thus, it is unnecessary for the majority of administrative tasks to connect to your Home Server via Remote Desktop..

Here’s a Screenshot:

IMPORTANT: This AddIn is only intended for advanced users who have at least some experience with administering a Windows Server 2003! The AddIn allows easy access to areas where you can really harm your Home Server if you’re unsure about what you’re doing! E.g. you shouln’t try to activate the server’s Soft-RAID-Functionality for its hard drives. This will confuse the backup service permanently (which I had to learn the hard way).

As the AddIn allows access to areas which were not intended by Microsoft to be accessible from within the Home Server Console, you might experience some glitches or unexpected behavior, none of which is likely to harm your server. E.g. you won’t be able to launch a new instance of explorer from the context menu of a volume under “My Computer”. Evidently nothing will happen, but after closing the Home Server Console on the client computer you will not be logged off but will find yourself being connected to the server’s desktop. There you will have to explicitly log off from the start menu. Those who cannot live with little oddities like this shouldn’t bother with installing the AddIn. But those who always need full control over all administrative areas of their Home Server may find the AddIn somewhat useful.

Download Advanced Admin Console AddIn Version 0.1.0 Beta.

    Wonderful Add-in….thanks for you efforts!

Ditto on Charlyx request #1. Saving the last View Mode (i.e. Icons) rather than reverting to Detail View in the Control Panel and Administrative Tasks would be a nice enhancement.

    Hi,

    Great job,

    Only two questions/sugestions:

1.- For future release (if is posible), could you save preferences over user views ?. When I select to see view option panels to: “icons format”, this preference ins’t save, and I have to select again, ann and so .

2.- After add-in installation, I review all folders options, and in folder: “My Places network”, appeared someone similar to “Alex ….”, What is it ?, I remove it inmediatly, but peharps you forgot remove it before give us this release for download ?

    Thanks a lot

I love this add-in. I use the custom section to link to the Desktop Icon so the Desktop will show up (no need to use Dos prompt and type explorer). And I link to IE so I can get a browser to pop up to log into some services I have running on WHS.

I’d like to see the Desktop link as one of the main links. Also the ability to move those links around. Some of the default ones I really don’t want to use very often.

Good work on this add in!

    Hello Andreas,

For now i don’t have many comments. I sure hope u will be working on any progress on the side.
Indeed consider the amount of downloads as an Honourable deed towards u.

I don’t have any suggestions and I hope to here soon, if I might find any errors in the future. Looking forward to the SP1, since there are some things I hope they worked on. Also the language range should be wider then just English, I prefer Dutch ;)

I think that this add in is absolutely fantastic. It will make it easier to manage my HP MediaSmart Server.

I have a suggestion. Would it be possible to add a button for SHUTDOWN and another button for RESTART?

    Thanks

The Advanced Admin Console is a multilanguage build. The installer user interface might appear in german, but you are not supposed to see it. Please go here (http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=800) to get a step-by-step description of how to install the Advanced Admin Console AddIn.

I relocated the downloads to a new server (under a newly created subdomain). Maybe your ISP’s DSN server does not yet obtain DNS information about the new subdomain. I have verified the new download links and they all work for me. Please try again!

    Hi Andreas,

When I run the installation program the language is not English. Where can I get the add-in that supports the English language?

I got a PM from Ron where he told me that his troubles were not caused by my Advanced Console AddIn, but allegedly by the WebGuide AddIn. I want to reassure people that my addin won’t do any harm on their home servers, so here’s an excerpt from his message:
    [quote]27.01.2008 20:41
(…) There was anoher add in that I installed, and it turned out that that one was the one giving me the problem. It took quite a bit more investigation for me to find that out, and I was goign to go back and provide that information to others once I was rock solid sure of the issue. The other add in is called Web-Guide. When I uninstalled this product, the problem dissapeared with it. I have had no problems whatsoever with your add in, and thank you for it

I installed this add on. After I did, i got the mssage the the console would close, and I should reopen it to continue work. When I tried to reopen the console, all I got was the console window, with a solid blue screen, no icons, nothing. Now, when I try and open the console on any computer except the server, all i get is a blue console background. The console does open properly on the server, however. I uninstalled the product, but my console wiondows were not returned back to normal. Anyone know anything about this probem? I would hate to have to do a whole reinstall to fix it. I did try to reinstall the connector software on ther remote computers, but that made no difference in my problem

Great work….was using the Program Launcher Add-In before this came along but that is not without its little annoyances….

I notice that there are left and right arrows on the left of the admin bar. I assume this is for a future release as I can not find where to add my own buttons…there is no configuration tab under settings.

Either way, still great and still going to use it.

Do you have a forum where I can subscribe to be notified of new releases?

    Thanks
    Nathan
