Advanced Admin Console AddIn: Version 0.5.0 Beta now available for download
This new release of the Advanced Admin Console AddIn for Windows Home Server is now fully compatible with Internet Explorer 8 (previous versions were not). In order to achieve compatibility with IE8 some fundamental changes have been implemented under the hood. As a result, the Workgroup item is no longer available. To compensate this, access to the recycle bin has been added. There’s also a new “Show Desktop” button, which when clicked launches a full Windows Desktop session. Make sure to logoff from the server when using this. You can either logoff from the WHS console or the start menu.
Another new feature is the integration of Windows Search. I consider this feature experimental. Please feel free to provide feedback on Windows Search integration in AAC.
Here’s a screenshot of AAC 0.5.0 running on Windows Home Server (Power Pack 2) with Internet Explorer 8 installed:
This version has been thoroughly tested on Windows Home Server (RTM, PP1, PP2, IE6, IE7, IE8).

Hi, is the feedback also possible via homeserverland.com? Thats my favorite site for the whs.
Of course it is. I’ll try to stop by there regularly.
Love the add in, been using it since it first came out. Love to make my own links to other programs or areas within the WHS OS. Love the Desktop link, as now I don’t have to add it in myself
Thanks.
Love your comment
so I downloaded the .msi but when I add it to my add-ins folder it isn’t recognized as an available add in. I think it is because of the lack of digital signature. any suggestions?
You could try the WHS Addin Clean Up tool
–> http://mswhs.com/2008/10/01/addin-cleanup-tool/
(Please read the instructions CAREFULLY)!
I too can not see the new version in the avalible add in list. I made sure I uninstalled the old version first before I copied the file into the Add-Ins folder. I ran the Addin Clean Up Tool, but it didn’t list either the old or new version. Where do I go from here?
Thanks,
Ted
BTW, the old version I was runing was 0.4.3 if that helps.
Ok, this is strange, after starting and closing the Windows Home Server Console several times, it has just showed up in the avalible add-ins list. Don’t know why it took so long to realize it was there……
It seems like the WHS addin discovery mechanism is a little clumsy. That’s why ASoft released the cleanup tool.
I like the link to minimize the WHS console, but it doesn’t work like the To Desktop add-in. When you minimize the console, explorer isn’t launched like in To Desktop which loads the desktop properly. You just get a blank screen with no Start menu etc.
I’d love to see this working since I don’t need To Desktop and it saves clicking into the Settings menu just to minimize the desktop.
Hi Have downloaded the new Advanced Admin Console and trying to follow instructions but can not remove the old version of the addin. Thoughts?
Can you be a little more specific on what you’re trying to do, how you’re doing it, and which error messages you encouter or what else is preventing you from successfully upgrading AAC to the latest version?
Hi – just wanted to say THANK YOU for taking the time to create this and make it available to us. I just began my exploration of WHS and I consider this an absolutely critical add-in. Thanks, again!
Hi,
Thank you for this addin. I have upgraded to the latest ver 0.5.0 Beta
I can’t find the launch Desktop button? Am I missing something?
Please let me know how to access this feature.
Jimi
Just click the small drop down arrow on the far right of the AAC toolbar. Watch this video if you can’t find it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyrmB_1LIOg
Thanks for the add-in. I just installed AAC 0.5.0 and I get an error about being incompatible with IE8 when I try to access the tabs (such as control panel, start menu, etc). I’m on Power Pack 2 with no other add-ins. Did I miss something?
Hmm. Nevermind, I rebooted the server, and now it seems fine.
Hi.
I installed the addin and now all I get is a blue screen. How do I unistall?
The “Blue Background” is a scenario which is not specific to the
Advanced Admin Console AddIn (just google for Windows Home Server
Console and Blue Background and you will find that many people have
also experienced this problem). At first you could try to reset the
console from the options menu on the WHS console logon screen. If that
doesn’t help, please connect to your server via RDP (run mstsc.exe).
User name is Administrator, password is your WHS server password.
Reboot your server from the start menu in your RDP session. After your
server is up again the WHS console should work just fine.
According to an HP Tech in the (MediaSmart) Server group, I was told- THERE IS A BUG IN THIS ADD-IN WHEN/IF YOU EVER UNINSTALL IT. YOUR SYSTEM/DRIVE WILL (HAVE TO) BE WIPED/RESET TO THE FACTORY DEFAULT LEVEL.
Have you or anyone else ever heard or experienced or experimented with this?
Keith, I can assure you that the installation/uninstallation of the Advanced Admin Console AddIn will definitely not do any harm to your WHS/MediaSmart server. There’s also absolutely NO WAY that uninstalling an addin will harm your server in a way that it has to be reset to factory default (unless the uninstall is implemented in an absolutely negligent way and/or the addin had to be classified as malware).
Can you please direct me to the forum thread of the MediaSmart Server group you’re referring to. I’d really like to discuss the technical details with the HP Tech!
