Advanced Admin Console vNext for Windows Server Codename ‘Vail’ and ‘Aurora’ seeks beta testers

September 15th, 2010

You may have read about the Technical Preview over at homeserverland.com, wegotserved.co.uk, mediasmartserver.net or maybe the German blogs and news sources Bjoerns Windows Blog or home-server-blog.de.

Today, I’m proud to announce that the new version of my popular Advanced Admin Console AddIn (AAC) for the upcoming Windows Server offerings for home users and small businesses has reached an important milestone.aac_vnext

I made a first technical preview version of AAC available to tech-bloggers and the (p)reviews they’ve written so far tell me that I’m on the right track.

The next step is now to give AAC to about 30 beta testers to try it out and give feedback. If you’d like to take part in the beta test please write a short comment on this post, describing on which configuration you would be able to test AAC. Please include the following information:

  • Windows Server Version you would install AAC on (‘Vail’, ‘Aurora’ or both)
  • Client operating system version(s)
  • Client operating system language version you normally work on
  • Whether you’ll be using real machines or virtual machines for testing
  • Whether you have experience with AAC on Windows Home Server (v1)
  • Your general level of experience with Windows Home Server v1 and/or ‘Vail’/’Aurora’

Make sure to enter a valid email address so that I can send you your beta invitation. Beta tester invitations will not go out before September 22, 2010 – please be patient.

In the meantime please refer to these resources to find out more about the new version of the Advanced Admin Console and Windows Server codename ‘Vail’ and ‘Aurora’ in general:

    Good Evening Andreas,

I am presently completing a build of two (2) identical high-powered servers for the new Vail and Aurora, and have one of those new OSs running on each. I have been using WHS v1 for a little over two years, and already use AAC Version 0.5.2 on my two present WHS V1 servers (HP ex485 with 8TB of storage and a Custom Built unit with 20TB of storage). I would very much like to try out your beta version of AAC for Vail and Aurora. I have over 20 years of computer experience, and my native language is English (USA), and present client OS is Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Best regards. TheBeagle

Using both WHS (MediaSmart 470) and a custom Windows 2008 SBS server at home. Doing IIS forwarding from WHS to allow access to both servers from my 1 static IP and give my wife and kids access to OWA, and our shared calendar (on sharepoint) from the web. Would love to have access to admin tools from remote and from my desktop.

I’m a gearhead who’s been in Windows Admin land for about ten years.
I have recently setup my shiny new HP EX495 and after connecting the first time was VERY disappointed at the limitations of the console interface. Then I started poking around and your admin add-in for WHS v1 has gotten so many kudos around the web I thought I’d chime in.
I am passionately devoted to new technology (though my wallet would prefer otherwise!), and am very anxious to install the Vail v2 preview on this HP box (after I clone the original disc of course). I work for a ever-growing non-profit health care agency with a small group of techs.
Of the 4 or 5 that regularly do admin work in WIN2003/2008 I seem to be the only one who lives and breathes my custom MMC.

Please consider me for your beta tester program. Pretty please. With pickles.

    Thanks,
    Allan

Home built WHS physical running on:
Intel 510MO mobo with Atom D510 1.66, 2Gb RAM (in 1 of 2 slots), 320Gb WD HDD SATA

Right now this is my production WHS v1 server but I swap out the HDD when I have time to play around with Vail (approx 2 hours a week). Currently connecting to the Vail server is a Samsung NB30touch Notebook running Win7 Starter.

I’ve used AAC in v1 but it was a while ago – would like to give it a go again when Vail is released.

I hope you’ll consider this adequate for testing your product.
